In early December GRIN was presented with a special opportunity to help rescue five golden retrievers from China. Our contact from RAGOM (Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest) who also helped us rescue the Turkey dogs several years ago reached out with this new mission. RAGOM was working with a local northeast Ohio organization, China Rescue Dogs, when they thought of GRIN joining the efforts. Once we were asked, it was a certain “YES!” Our goal as an organization is to always put the dogs first, ready to rescue Golden Retrievers from near and far when they are in need. The China Goldens were previously in Chinese shelters or with other Chinese rescues. Since China has very minimal animal welfare laws, dogs are not safe there. Now that they are in the US, they will be safe and loved forever.  These 5 golden retrievers traveled to the US with a total of 29 dogs from Beijing. GRIN has named this group of five pups “The Merry Five” (Comet, Dasher, Vixen, Prancer and Dancer).

They landed at JFK Airport on December 18th after an already long journey from mainland China to Beijing. The trip totaled at over 60 hours by the time they arrived in Cleveland.  Boy were they ready to get out of their crates!  In the early hours of December 19th GRIN Volunteers helped welcome The Merry Five and transported them to our vet partners for a checkup before heading to their foster homes the next day. These dogs were so happy and excited when they got out of their travel crates, they just knew that their lives would be changed forever.

These dogs are so resilient after all that they have been through in their lives, more than what any dog should experience.  Not only are they resilient they are thankful. Regardless of their long journey or past trauma, they all still wag their tails and love human affection. We are so honored and blessed to be a part of their rescue journey. They deserve nothing but the best.

You can learn more about the Merry Five on our Facebook and Instagram pages, with several heartwarming pictures and videos. While this rescue brought great happiness to GRIN, it was an expensive endeavor.   Due to current travel circumstances around COVID, they flew as cargo instead of being deemed accompanied baggage as in the past.  Flying cargo is expensive and was $2,500 per dog or $12,500 for the Merry Five. This does not include any medical needed at our vet partner.

We would never want to turn down helping dogs in need due to lack of funds and for that reason we are asking for help from our supporters. There several fundraising opportunities currently going on. We have different sponsorship levels available, a t-shirt sale, a doggie bandana for sale or just a simple donation via our website. No donation is too small, every little bit helps us get closer to our goal. We are so thankful of all our wonderful supporters, it is because of you that we can continue to help Golden Retrievers whether it be from puppy mills, owner surrenders, strays, or even international rescues – without your generous donations we could not do it, so THANK YOU!

GRIN 2020 Event Season

Thank You GRIN Family Updated 10/29/2020 We want to THANK OUR GRIN FAMILY and everyone who has supported us through our 2020 event season. Due to Covid-19, we faced many fundraising challenges. Because of our generous supporters, we were able to hold Virtual Fundraisers; Bark In Your Park in May, the Ice Cream Social in July, August Auction and our Howl O' Ween Party & Pumpkin Pull in October! We were also able to hold two, in person Swim/Dockdiving events, where we could maintain safe protocols and social distancing.Because of the continued financial support we received, we are able to continue rescuing dogs that have very specific and often very expensive medical and behavioral needs. The GRIN Board of Trustees thanks you and the dogs who are now safe and happy and healthy also thank you! For more information click on "Read More".

Earlier this year, as my husband and I moved through the foster application process, we were both excited and nervous. There were so many unknowns. We had no idea what to expect in a displaced dog, what we were capable of and what was best for our resident Golden, Luna.
